South Padre Island, Texas is a coastal city that’s also the most southern point in the continental United States. The city is located about 100 miles from the Mexican border and it has a population of 74,050 people. It’s safe with many great amenities for people to enjoy as well as an excellent environment for families with children.

The city is known for its mild climate and beaches as well as the Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark, a summer destination with water slides, wave pools and tube rides. It’s also widely considered a family-friendly town.

Diversity

South Padre Island has a diverse set of people from all over the world. The United States Census Bureau estimates that the racial demographics for South Padre Island are formed from 70% White, 25% Hispanic, and 7% Black.

Academics

There are several universities and colleges on the island, along with many public and private schools. South Padre Island is also home to a community college that is widely known as one of the best in Texas. The two universities in town were ranked 697th and 1,026th out of 1,800 colleges by US News World Report in 2010.

South Padre Island is a very safe place to live. The city has a low crime rate and in 2013, the murder rate in South Padre Island was 0%. The overall crime rate is 32% lower than the average of Texas.

Environment

The environment we live in is also another reason why it’s great to raise children in South Padre Island. There are many opportunities for outdoor activities and sightseeing nearby, like birding at Boca Chica Beach or kayaking in the Laguna Madre Bay. The warm weather makes it a great place to escape from cold winters.

Religions

The majority of the South Padre Island population follows Christianity with about 55% of residents identifying as Catholic and another 25% identifying as Protestant or other Christian denominations. There are churches for several different religions in town to accommodate people’s needs, including Baptist, Methodist, and Pentecostal among many more.

Transportation

There are roads and highways leading to South Padre Island from Southern Texas and Eastern Mexico. There is a ferry service that leaves from Port Isabel, TX but it only runs between October and April due to the temperature of the ocean water. Car rental services such as Hertz, Budget, Enterprise, National and Alamo are located on the island in-case visitors do not bring their own vehicles. There are also public transportation options for people who do not drive such as taxis, school buses and the trolley that goes to the Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark.

 

South Padre Island is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. It has amenities for everyone, from the youngest children to the oldest adults. There are many things that make this city great, but one of its best aspects is how safe it is thanks to strict law enforcement.
